Hans Pizka

Hans Pizka (born March 17, 1942 in Metz , CdZ area Lorraine ) is an Austrian horn player .

Life

Hans Pizka grew up as the eldest son of the horn player Erich Pizka in Linz. He had violin lessons at the age of four, and the viola and horn at the age of nine. The first teacher was his father. He later studied horn with Gottfried von Freiberg and Josef Veleba in Vienna.

Pizka received his first review of his horn playing at the age of 11. At 15 he played his first horn concerto with professional orchestral accompaniment. He graduated from the Academic Gymnasium in Linz, which came from Jesuit tradition.

Pizka began his orchestral career on January 1st, 1962 as 2nd horn player in the Bruckner Orchester Linz , but switched to 1st horn only two months later. In 1965 he succeeded Gerd Seifert as principal horn with the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker . From 1967 to 2007 he was principal horn of the Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich. Since 1978 he has often played as a substitute on the first horn of the Vienna Philharmonic . He worked as a lecturer, horn designer, horn collector, editor of many works on horns and producer of CD recordings.

Hans Pizka has played under the direction of important conductors such as Herbert von Karajan , Karl Böhm , Carlos Kleiber , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Zubin Mehta , Seiji Ozawa , Riccardo Muti , Claudio Abbado , Rafael Kubelík and Leonard Bernstein . In addition, Hans Pizka appeared as a soloist in many countries.

As a member of the Allschlaraff Symphony Orchestra, at the end of his solo career in April 2011, he played Mozart's Third Horn Concerto five times in Argentina and Brazil.

For two years he was Vice President and for 18 years in the Advisory Council of the IHS ( International Horn Society ). In 2002 the IHS made him an honorary member. From 1983 to 1994 he translated and published The Horncall , the IHS magazine, into German.

For his lifelong commitment to his art and his activities as an ambassador for music, he was awarded the title of professor by the Austrian Federal President.
