Hans Preuss
Hans Preuss (born September 3, 1876 in Leipzig , † May 12, 1951 in Erlangen ) was a Lutheran theologian and professor at the University of Erlangen .
Life
Hans Preuss, the son of a teacher, attended the Nikolaischule in his hometown and the grammar school in Freiberg from 1887 to 1896 . He then studied in Leipzig and Halle and in 1901 submitted a dissertation to Erich Marcks on Luther's writing principle . In 1906 he closed the theol. Licentiate with a treatise on Martin Luther and his ideas about the Antichrist . This was followed by teaching at the Leipzig Thomasschule (1901), at the secondary school in Glauchau (1901-03) and from Easter to Michaelis 1903 at the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig. From 1903 to 1905 he was an inspector at the student residence in Vienna . Then he was employed as a teacher at the grammar school in Zwickau . From Easter 1906 to Michaelmas 1914 he was again a teacher at the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig. He was then appointed as an associate professor for church history in Erlangen, in 1919 appointed personal professor of Hermann Jordan and in 1923 as his successor to the chair of church history and in the seminar for Christian archeology . From the winter semester 1922/23 to the summer semester 1923 he was rector of the University of Erlangen .
As early as 1923 Preuss organized a commemoration for Leo Schlageter in Erlangen. In 1932 and in the Reichstag election in March 1933 , he called for the election of Hitler. During the book burning in May 1933, Preuss was actively involved alongside Helmut Weigel on Erlanger Schlossplatz and on October 20 and 27, 1933, published an essay "Luther and Hitler" in the "Allgemeine Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirchenzeitung" (AELKZ): They are both Leader and destined for the salvation of the people. But Preuss never joined the NSDAP and did not belong to the German Christians . In 1945 he was dismissed and in 1947 the US occupation forces described him as unworthy of a new teaching position. The University of Erlangen imposed a lifelong house ban. Classified only as a fellow traveler, he was rehabilitated in 1949.
