Hans Rohrbach
Hans Rohrbach (born February 27, 1903 in Berlin , † December 19, 1993 in Bischofsheim an der Rhön ) was a German mathematician . He became known beyond the boundaries of his subject through his lectures and publications on the relationship between natural science and the Christian faith .
Life
Hans Rohrbach was a son of the publicist Paul Rohrbach and his wife Clara geb. Müller. After graduating from high school in 1921, he studied mathematics , physics and philosophy at the University of Berlin for two years . In 1923 he went with his father to the United States to give lectures on German students at the invitation of American universities. From 1924 to 1929 he continued his studies in Berlin; From 1927 to 1929 he was an assistant assistant, then until 1935 assistant at the mathematical seminar. In 1932 he received his doctorate under Issai Schur with a thesis on The characters of the binary congruence groups mod p 2 for Dr. phil. His specialty was additive number theory .
In 1936 Rohrbach went to Göttingen as a senior assistant , where he completed his habilitation in 1937. In 1941 he became an associate professor and in 1942 a full professor at the German University in Prague . Rohrbach was a member of the NSDAP and the SA , but was not considered completely reliable due to his friendship with Jewish colleagues. During the Second World War he was in the deciphering service of the Foreign Office ("Pers Z", Dahlem special service) involved in deciphering encrypted messages. Among other things, his working group managed to break the codes of the US embassy in Bern . On behalf of the Allies, Rohrbach wrote a report about the methods used, which appeared in the FIAT Review of German Science series in 1948 . From his time as a cryptanalyst , his statement, formulated in 1946, “ The solution is only seen as finished when all the associated keys have been worked out ”, which is known as Rohrbach's demand . He also wrote the motto “When assessing the cryptanalytic security of a procedure, encryption errors and other violations of the encryption discipline must be included”, called Rohrbach's maxim .
After the war, Rohrbach and his wife Rose (née Gadebusch) turned to the Christian faith. Rohrbach became the first chairman of the student mission in Germany and in the following decades was particularly involved in the border area between science and theology . From 1951 until his retirement he was full professor for mathematics at the University of Mainz , 1966/67 also its rector . From 1952 to 1977 he edited the journal for pure and applied mathematics together with Helmut Hasse , after he had supported Hasse in its publication since 1934.
In 1977 the Rohrbach couple moved to Bischofsheim an der Rhön in order to set up a speaker and pastoral care center at the Christian conference center Hohe Rhön (Rohrbach was also chairman of the conference center for many years). One focus of her work was the care of occult bound people. In addition, Rohrbach published numerous books and essays on scientific and theological topics.
