Hans Rudolf Stampfli (born March 11, 1925 in Biberist ; † January 10, 1994 ) was a Swiss archaeozoologist .

Life

Hans Rudolf Stampfli was born in Biberist as the son of government councilor Otto Stampfli . He studied zoology at the University of Basel and received his doctorate in 1949 with the dissertation "Histological studies on Wolff's body (mesonephros) in birds and its conversion to epididymis and minor ovary". From 1952 until his retirement in 1990, Stampfli worked as a biology teacher at the Solothurn Cantonal School . A reduction in the number of lessons enabled him to do a lot of research: from 1961 to 1981 he worked as an osteologist for the Natural History Museum in Bern , in the early 1960s he did study visits to the universities of Kiel , Munich and a year at Yale University in New Haven (Connecticut) . From 1967 to 1989 Stampfli was a member of the Solothurn cantonal archeology commission, of which he was president for some time. In this capacity he founded the publication series "Archeology of the Canton of Solothurn" and built up the Solothurn canton archeology. As president of the commission, Stampfli was in charge of the excavation and conservation of the Frohburg ruins from 1973 to 1977 under the scientific direction of Werner Meyer .

From 1952 until his death, Stampfli published numerous articles on archeozoology in scientific publications, but also in periodicals such as the Berner Tagblatt and its successor, the Berner Zeitung . In 1991 he published a bibliography of archaeozoological literature together with Jörg Schibler (extended version 1995 in digital form). He was also active in the field of biographical and scientific history, for example with the essay " Wilhelm Fabry's presents to the Bern library" (1982), his great biography of Amanz Gressly (1986) and the essay on the Solothurn canton school teacher Otto Möllinger , who wrote in 1869 was given early retirement because he had declared himself to be a "follower of a religion based on reason and science" (1992). Stampfli dedicated the last, unfinished work to the history of the beer breweries and taverns in the city of Solothurn in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
