Life

Schrem financed his studies in economics and sociology by teaching shorthand . In February 1940 he worked as a research assistant in the press department of the Foreign Office , and from 1941 to 1942 as an assistant to the press officer in Stockholm . He spent the rest of the war as a war correspondent at the front.

In 1948 he became editor-in-chief of the "Lübecker Nachrichten" (LN). He fascinated readers of the post-war years with his Sunday column "Good morning, dear reader", in which he brought the events of everyday life after the war to the people. He repeatedly commented on church events and entertained the readership with anecdotes of high literary quality. He initiated the reconciliation between Thomas Mann and his hometown Lübeck, and was a multiple guest in Werner Höfer's international morning pint . He died unexpectedly on October 1, 1961, at the height of his work, shortly after his fiftieth birthday.

His second wife Hildegard Schrem was in charge of the women’s and youth pages of the LN until 1988. As “Mrs. Katrin answers”, she was also an institution in Lübeck. She outlived her husband by 47 years and died in November 2008 at the age of 94.
