Hans Sigmund Heller

Hans Sigmund Heller (born September 25, 1905 in Brno , † December 29, 1974 in Bristol ) was an Austrian pharmacologist .

Life

Heller first studied chemistry in Vienna and Prague and received his doctorate in 1927 at the University of Prague. His interest in pharmacology led him to the University of Vienna, where he researched the water balance and the influence of neurohypophyseal hormones as a research assistant to Ernst Peter Pick . There he also met Otto Loewi , who possibly aroused Heller's interest in the developing neuroendocrinology .

In 1930 he became a medical student at Emmanuel College in Cambridge and, after completing the Natural Science Tripo, initially returned to pharmacology in Vienna, before returning to Great Britain in 1935 to complete medical training at University College Hospital in London.

Heller stayed in England and became a British citizen. In 1938 he completed his medical degree, in 1948 he obtained a doctorate in medicine . From 1949 to 1971 he taught as professor and head of the pharmacology department at Bristol University .

Endocrinology was a bright scientific focus. Stations in his scientific life included dean of the medical faculty, president of the European Society of Comparative Endocrinology (1965 to 1969), chair of the Society of Endocrinology (until his death in 1974), Member of the Council of the Society for the Study of Addiction and editor of the Journal of Endocrinology (1963-1974). He has authored and edited numerous books on endocrinology.

In 1933 Heller married the legal scholar Josephine Gertrude Liebich, with whom he had two daughters.
