Hans Simon (sports scientist)

Hans (Hannes) Simon (born November 15, 1928 - † February 19, 2020 ) was a German sports historian and university professor .

Life

From 1951 to 1990 Simon was a  university lecturer for sports history at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig . Under the direction of Lothar Skornings with Günter Erbach , Paul Marschner , Hans Schuster , Georg Wieczisk and Günther Wonneberger he was one of the authors who wrote the book “Brief Outline of the History of Physical Culture in Germany since 1800”, which was published in 1952 by Sportverlag Berlin . In his research work he dealt with the following topics:

  • History of physical culture, and development of physical culture and sport in the German Democratic Republic ,
  • The role of sport "in the struggle of the German working class for power and in building up socialism in the German Democratic Republic",
  • Olympic Games, Spartakiads, Workers' Sports and Classification of the 1936 Summer Olympic Games ,
  • Development of competitive sports in the GDR and the fight for GDR sports for international recognition,
  • " Revanchism in West Germany and its work in West German sport".

Together with Margot Budzisch , Klaus Huhn and Lothar Skorning he is one of the authors of the book "Chronicle of GDR Sports" published in 2000.

Hans Simon died at the age of 91.
