Hans Ulrich Roll

Hans Ulrich Roll (born May 26, 1910 in Danzig ; † December 29, 2000 ) was a German meteorologist.

After graduating from high school in 1928, he studied mathematics, physics and biology in Göttingen and Danzig. Roll received his doctorate in meteorology and oceanography from the University of Berlin in 1939. From 1935 he was in the naval weather service.

In 1941 he was one of the few survivors of the sinking of the auxiliary cruiser Pinguin and was taken prisoner by the British, from which he returned in late 1946.

In 1947 he went to the German Weather Service in Hamburg, which was being established. His main research interests were the interaction between ocean and atmosphere as well as the topic of ocean waves. He was department head and 1958-65 head of the Maritime Weather Office.

In 1962 he became an honorary professor at the University of Hamburg and gave lectures in maritime meteorology. In 1964/65 he was visiting professor in Florida .

From 1965 to 1974 he was President of the German Hydrographic Institute as the successor to Gerhard Zwiebler . - Roll was a member of various German and international scientific bodies a. a. the German Scientific Commission for Marine Research of the International Council for Marine Research in Copenhagen, the Senate Commission for Oceanography of the German Research Foundation , etc.
