Hans Walter (archaeologist)

Hans Walter (born October 5, 1920 in Auerbach; † March 4, 2001 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Walter received his doctorate in 1953 under Ernst Buschor at the University of Munich and completed his habilitation there in 1963. In 1966 he accepted a full professorship at the University of Salzburg , which he held until his retirement in 1986.

Walter dealt mainly with the archeology of Greek sanctuaries. Initially involved in the excavation in the Heraion of Samos , he has been in charge of the excavations of Old Aegina since 1966 . In addition, he also researched mythological representations, vase painting and sculpture. He was married to the Greek archaeologist Elena Walter-Karydi .
