Hans Wulz (painter)
Hans Wulz (born April 1, 1909 in Landeck in Tyrol ; † October 9, 1985 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter of late expressionism and a restorer .
life and work
Born in Tyrol, Hans Wulz moved to Salzburg as early as 1910, where he completed an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor with the sculptor Bruno Berger from 1924 to 1928 . During this time, he took time - and drawing lessons from Valentin Janschek and Hans Piffrader at the State Trade School in Salzburg. From 1931 to 1933 Wulz was a student at the graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna.
During the Second World War , Wulz was at the front from 1940 to 1944, where he was taken prisoner by the English . From 1948 to 1952 Wulz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Christian Ludwig Martin . He then went on study trips to Sicily , Sardinia , Switzerland and Germany . In 1949 he received the State Prize, in 1950 the Second Honorary Prize for overall performance on the occasion of the 64th annual exhibition of the Kunstverein Salzburg in the Künstlerhaus . In 1959, Hans Wulz was awarded the Great Golden Medal of Honor of the Vienna Künstlerhaus for his overall performance, and in 1962 he was awarded the title of Professor .
In 1961/62 Wulz and his painter colleague Josef Fastl created the crucifixion panorama in Einsiedeln (Switzerland) with a height of 10 meters and a circumference of 100 meters, which depicts more than 500 partly life-size figures from the crucifixion story of Jesus.
Hans Wulz created works for the festival hall of the St. Elisabeth parsonage and for the Augustinian Church in Salzburg. In addition, together with Max von Poosch, he made significant contributions to the restoration of the frescoes by Karl von Blaas in the Vienna Army History Museum, which were partially destroyed by air raids . The ceiling fresco of the ballroom in the town hall of Zistersdorf is also by Hans Wulz. Works by his hand are now in the Army History Museum, the Vienna Museum , the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture , the Museum Lower Austria and the Austrian Embassy in London .
His catalog raisonné includes several hundred oil paintings as well as some watercolors and sketches , as well as sculptures. Most of these works are still in private hands today. Today he is one of the best known and most important Austrian painters of the 20th century.
