The Hootenanny Singers were a folk group from Sweden who became known nationwide in the 1960s . The guitarist and lead singer Björn Ulvaeus became world famous in the 1970s as a member of the pop group ABBA .
history
The origins of the group go back to the jazz band "Mackie's Skiffle Group", which was formed around 1960 by the musicians Hansi Schwarz, Johan Karlberg (1943–1992) and Håkan Hven. In 1961 the group was renamed "The Partners" and got two new members with Tonny Rooth and Björn Ulvaeus . Due to a similarity of names, the band was renamed again in the summer of 1963, this time in "The West Bay Singers" (The English West Bay is synonymous with the Swedish " Västervik "). At the same time, Stig Anderson and Bengt Bernhag were looking for a group that could fit into the "hootenanny" concept, in which the musicians play on stage and include the audience. Bernhag became aware of the West Bay Singers through a music competition and signed them to Polar Music in September 1963 . In order to adapt the group to its concept, it was renamed "The Hootenanny Singers" ( Hootenanny is an old Scottish word for song recital or jam session ). They made their debut in the Swedish TV show Hylands Hörna (German - Hyland's corner) with the song Jag väntar vid min mila by the Swedish poet Dan Andersson . For an American LP release in 1966 they called themselves "The Northern Lights".
