Life

From 1940 Dellweg studied chemistry at the Universities of Cologne and Frankfurt am Main . In 1941 he was recruited into the Wehrmacht , so he was only able to continue his studies in Heidelberg in 1947 when he was released from French prisoners of war.

At the University of Heidelberg, he received his dissertation on nucleic acids in 1952 : one year before the double helix structure of DNA was discovered, he isolated the deoxin nucleosides from raw DNA, presented them preparatively and examined their behavior in the metabolism of bacteria.

In 1967 Dellweg was appointed to the chair for fermentation technology at the TU Berlin and was appointed full professor. In the same year he was appointed head of the Research Institute for Fermentation Sciences at the Institute for Fermentation Industry.
