The German Hefewerke GmbH has a market share of 30 percent of the second-largest German yeast producer based in Nuremberg - book . It produces around 30 million kg of baker's yeast annually .

history

Share for RM 100 in Bast AG from January 1942

The company was founded in 1855 by Johann Michael Bast as "Bast AG Preßhefe-Fabrik". In 1896 it was renamed Presshefe & Spiritus AG and in 1920 BAST AG

In 1970 the Nuremberg company merged with the "Deutsche Hefewerken" in Hamburg (today Ohly GmbH). In 1981 DHW was initially taken over by Hüls AG in Marl , in 1994 by the Australian Burns Philp group and finally in 2004 by Associated British Foods (ABF).

In 2008 the DHW plant in Nuremberg was sold to the Swiss Indawisa Holding AG, while the Hamburg plant , which specializes in the production of yeast extracts for industrial needs, remained with ABF.

The managing director of Deutsche Hefewerke GmbH, Thomas Dellweg, was temporarily chairman of the German Yeast Industry Association .

building

The access to the DHW plant: the administration building from 1855 is on the right, the warehouse building from 1890 in the background

The oldest buildings on the Buch factory premises date back to the time it was founded and are under monument protection . These are the administration building at Bucher Hauptstrasse 55, built in 1855, and the neighboring so-called magazine building. Overall, the plant presents itself as a grown industrial ensemble in which buildings from all eras are represented, including house No. 53, built in 1881, to the left of the driveway.
