Haplostachys bryanii (English name: Molokai islandmint, Bryan's Haplostachys) is probably extinct Hawaiian plant species of the genus Haplostachys within the family of the lip bloom plants (Lamiaceae). The genus Haplostachys occurs only in Hawaii . Of the once five species, however, only the species Haplostachys haplostachya , which is threatened with extinction, still exists.

It was named after the American naturalist Edwin Horace Bryan, Jr. (1898–1985), an exhibition curator at the Bishop Museum, Honolulu , Hawaii .

It was endemic to the west of Molokai Island . Their habitat consisted of dry grassland , bushland or forests around the West Molokai volcano .

description

Haplostachys bryanii was a perennial herbaceous plant that reached a height of 30 to 50 centimeters. The four to seven centimeters long leaves had an elongated heart-shaped shape and were covered with matted woolly hairs. The annual inflorescence consisted of 1 to 1.4 centimeters long white single flowers.

die out

This plant species was last recorded in 1918. It probably died out as a result of a combination of habitat destruction, the creation of agricultural land, displacement by non-native, introduced plants ( neophytes ) and as a result of overgrazing by goats and other cattle .
