Harald Garcke

Harald Garcke (born June 5, 1963 in Bremerhaven ) is a German mathematician and professor at the University of Regensburg .

Life

Harald Garcke studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Bonn from 1982 and completed his doctorate under Hans Wilhelm Alt in 1993 ( traveling wave solutions as the realization of phase transitions in memory metals ). In 1993/94 he was a post-doctoral student with Charles M. Elliott at the University of Sussex and from 1994 assistant in Bonn, where he completed his habilitation in 2000 (with the habilitation thesis On mathematical models for phase separation in elastically stressed solids ). In 2001 he received offers for C4 professorships at the Universities of Regensburg and Duisburg . Since 2002 he has been a C4 professor at the University of Regensburg . From 2005 to 2007 he was also dean of the Faculty of Mathematics.

Harald Garcke deals with nonlinear partial differential equations , problems with free boundary, phase field equations, numerical analysis and geometric evolution equations. Together with Christof Eck and Peter Knabner , he wrote a textbook on mathematical modeling.

His most important work includes contributions to the Cahn-Hilliard equation , the thin film equation and, in collaboration with Britta Nestler , phase field equations. His work with JW Barrett and R. Nürnberg on the mathematics of snow crystals attracted media attention.
