Harald Goertz

Harald Goertz OBE (born October 31, 1924 in Vienna ; died February 10, 2019 ) was an Austrian conductor , pianist and music researcher.

Life

Goertz studied piano (with Friedrich Wührer ) and conducting (with Leopold Reichwein , Josef Krips and Hans Swarowsky ) at the Music Academy and German and English at the University of Vienna . In 1947 he received his doctorate at the University of Vienna on the relationship between Franz Grillparzer and Zacharias Werner . Then he worked as Kapellmeister a. a. with the Vienna Boys' Choir . He was also assistant to Herbert von Karajan at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He worked as music director in Ulm and as professor at the State University of Music Stuttgart . From 1949 he worked at the Vienna University of Music, where he became associate professor in 1972 and full professor for accompaniment and opera history in 1981 . In 1995 he retired . Until 1991 he also worked at the Vienna State Opera . From 1964 to 1997 he was the founding president of the Austrian Society for Music, and then its vice-president.

Goertz was married and the father of two children.
