Harald Klein

Harald Klein (born October 11, 1955 in Trier ) is a German diplomat . He has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Guatemala and Belize since September 2016 .

Life

Harald Klein studied political science, sociology and journalism in Göttingen and Mainz . His activities as a research fellow and research assistant at the Institute for Development Policy and Development Research at the Ruhr University in Bochum often took him to Latin America and the Maghreb countries in the 1980s . From the end of 1988 he worked as a seconded project manager for the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), first in Peru and later in Colombia . In 1996, as chairman of the Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe regional office based in Budapest, he took over the control and coordination of foundation projects in 22 countries. In July 2002 he was appointed head of the programs in Latin America, which he carried out from Mexico City until June 2007. In mid-2007 he moved to the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Berlin .

At the beginning of 2010 he was appointed head of Department 2 of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development , responsible for Asia and Latin America. In May 2012, Klein was transferred to the Federal Foreign Office and appointed Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Rio de Janeiro in mid-August .

In 2013 and 2014 the "Year of Germany in Brazil" was celebrated. Around 1,000 events in more than ninety Brazilian cities made for a broad spectrum. The Consulate General in Rio managed to present four highlights in Rio de Janeiro: the exhibition “ United Buddy Bears - A Arte da Tolerância” on Copacabana Beach ; the video installation by the German artist Philipp Geist on the Cristo Redentor and in the Favela Santa Marta; the exhibition “A Arte quePermanece - Acervo Francisco ChagasFreitas” in the Centro Cultural Correios and the final concert with the German National Youth Ballet .

Klein has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Guatemala and Belize since September 2016.
