Harald Ostenfeld (born October 6, 1864 in Hvirring Sogn near Horsens , † October 24, 1934 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish Lutheran clergyman. He worked from 1911 to 1922 as bishop in the Diocese of Zealand of the Danish People's Church and after its division until 1932 in the Diocese of Copenhagen .

Life

Ostenfeld studied from 1882 to 1887 theology and then traveled abroad to church life, especially in Germany and Scotland meet. and became chaplain in Bandholm on Lolland in 1890 and chaplain in Frederiksberg in Copenhagen in 1893 . In 1897 he became pastor at St. Luke's Church and in 1908 at Solbjerg Church and provost of Frederiksberg. He became known when he published the pamphlet De Kristnes sociale Forpligtelser (The Social Obligations of Christians) during the great industrial action in 1899 and founded a Christian-social association. In 1911 he was appointed Bishop of Zealand by the liberal minister of education Jacob Appel . He supported his church politics, but also fought out some conflicts with him. When the Diocese of Zealand was divided into the Diocese of Copenhagen and the Diocese of Roskilde in 1922 , he became bishop of the former. In 1923 he was invited to the Danish churches in the USA .

Ostenfeld was chairman of the Danish pastors' association from 1905 to 1911 and editor of their magazine. Theologically he did not belong to any particular direction. His interest was in practical church work. He took up suggestions from the English Church, promoted church social work, the organization of the church in Copenhagen and the understanding between church and government agencies.

family

Ostenfeld was a son of the pastor Søren Rasmussen Ostenfeld (1837-1900) and a brother of the engineer Asger Ostenfeld . He was married twice; first from 1890 with Johanne Seidelin (1869–1901), a daughter of the mathematician Carl Seidelin (1833–1909), then from 1904 with Karen Bolwig Dall (1869–1954).

Honors

Ostenfeld became a knight in 1911 and commander of the Dannebrog Order in 1917 and Dannebrogsmann in 1913. In 1923 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology by Lund University .
