Bee Gees' 1st (1967) Horizontal Idea (album)
(1968)

Horizontal is the fourth, but international second music album by the Bee Gees .

production

Recordings for the album began in London's IBC Studios in August 1967 and were completed in late November 1967. One song, "Harry Braff", came from the recording sessions for Bee Gees' 1st , recorded in April 1967. After the psychedelic rock influences on the first album, the musical range of "Horizontal" was much wider. In addition to ballads with lush string arrangements (" Massachusetts ", "And The Sun Will Shine"), there were guitar-oriented rock songs ("The Earnest of Being George", "Harry Braff"), as well as contemporary pop songs influenced by the Beatles ("Lemons Never Forget "," Daytime Girl "). With "The Change is Made" the Bee Gees released their only blues track and with "Horizontal" and "The Earnest of Being George" they once again linked to the psychedelic pop of the previous album.

For the first time, the Bee Gees were mentioned as producers alongside Robert Stigwood . Bill Shepherd was again responsible for the arrangements .

In September 1967, "Massachusetts" was released as a single and became the Bee Gees' first number 1 hit in Germany. "World" followed in December (No. 2 in Germany), followed by the single "Words" in January 1968, which again led the Bee Gees to the top position of the German hit list. However, "Words" was not included on the album.

The album itself was released in February 1968 and accompanied the band on a tour of Germany that started on February 27th in Hamburg and ended on March 8th in Braunschweig . On March 10th she played a concert in Bern . On March 25th, »Horizontal« climbed to the top of the album charts in Germany (replacing the album »2 in 3« by the duo Esther & Abi Ofarim , the Barry Gibb composition of the year with "Morning of My Life" 1966), and held this position for two months.
