Harald Schieckel

Harald Schieckel (born December 15, 1920 in Berlin ; † October 17, 2012 in Oldenburg ) was a German historian and archivist .

Harald Schieckel spent his childhood and youth in Leipzig . There he also took up a degree in history and German . He completed this in 1948 with the state examination. In 1949 he was one of the last students of Rudolf Kötzschke to defend his dissertation on the domain and ministeriality of the Margraves of Meissen in the 12th and 13th centuries . Between 1950 and 1951 he attended the Institute for Archive Studies in Potsdam where he passed his second state examination. In October 1951 he took up a position at the Saxon State Main Archive in Dresden .

In August 1960 , Schieckel and his family fled from the GDR to West Germany. In 1961 he resumed his work as an archivist at the Oldenburg State Archives and was deputy archivist in 1963 until his retirement in 1985.
