Harari is a Semitic language spoken by the Aderi in the city of Harar , Ethiopia . That is why the language itself is sometimes called Aderi or Adere .

Since the other inhabitants in the area around Harar all speak Cushitic languages (especially Oromo and Somali ), the people around Harar have still retained their language, but are strongly influenced by these languages. The closest related languages are the Zay and the Silt'e .

The affiliation of the Harari to the Semitic languages was first recognized in the 19th century by Friedrich Müller in Vienna .
