Harm-Peer Carpenter

Harm-Peer Zimmermann (born January 16, 1958 in Herford ) is a German folklorist and professor at the Institute for Popular Cultures at the University of Zurich .

Life

Harm-Peer Zimmermann grew up in Husum , where he graduated from high school in 1976. From 1976 to 1986 he studied ethnology , sociology , philosophy , history , literary studies and Nordic studies (Danish) with changing focuses at the University of Kiel . At the same time he worked as a journalist for various newspapers of the Schleswig-Holstein newspaper publisher until 1983 . In 1988 he received his doctorate, awarded the Kiel Prize for the Promotion of Science. From 1990 to 1997 he worked at the Department of Folklore at Kiel University. In 1997 he completed his habilitation in Kiel and was offered a position at the University of Freiburg . From 1999 to 2012 he was Professor of European Ethnology / Cultural Studies at the University of Marburg . In 2012 he moved to the University of Zurich , where he has been a full professor at the Institute for Social Anthropology and Empirical Cultural Studies.

His work focuses on popular literatures and media with two main research areas: narrative research ( fairy tales , myths , legends ) and cultural anthropological research on aging and dementia (narrative gerontology , storytelling and discourses on age and dementia ). In addition, there are studies on questions of pop and folk music, cultural heritage, museums and exhibitions.

Zimmermann is editor of the international journal Fabula (Journal of Narrative Research. Journal of Folktale Studies. Revue d'Etudes sur le Conte Populaire) and Board Member of the Journal of Aging Studies (USA). From 2007 to 2010 he worked as an expert for the German federal government (sixth report on the elderly).

Harm-Peer Zimmermann is u. a. Member of the Presidium of the Ferdinand Tönnies Society and worked as editor on volume 4 of the Ferdinand Tönnies Complete Edition . He is also a member of the Scientific Council of the Brothers Grimm Society and a member of the Presidium of the Walter Kahn Fairy Tale Foundation. From 2002 to 2012 he was a member of the jury for the award of the Brothers Grimm Prize at the Philipps University of Marburg .
