Harro Zimmermann

Harro Zimmermann (born June 2, 1949 in Delmenhorst ) is a German literary scholar , publicist and radio editor . He is a member of the PEN Center Germany and the jury of the best non-fiction book list from Welt, WDR 5, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and ORF 1. He works and publishes in the field of German cultural, literary and media history from the 18th to the 21st century .

Life

Zimmermann studied law , German , political science and philosophy in Kiel and Göttingen . He worked in adult education from 1975 to 1979, received his doctorate in 1980 with a dissertation on Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock and worked as a grammar school teacher from 1979 to 1982. In 1982 he moved to the University of Bremen as a literary historian in the research focus 'Late Enlightenment' at the University of Bremen, where he was employed until 1987. In 1988, after years of freelance journalism, he became cultural editor at Radio Bremen . From 1995 to 2000 he was in charge of the 'CampusRadio' project, which was supported by the Universities of Bremen and Oldenburg and Radio Bremen.

Zimmermann was Chairman of the Board of the Society for German Press Research from 1996 to 1998 , from 1996 to 2006 a member of the Advisory Board of the Board of Directors of the Federal Academy for Cultural Education in Wolfenbüttel , and from 2000 to 2002 honorary managing director of the Günter Grass Foundation in Bremen. After his habilitation in 1998, he was appointed adjunct professor for modern German literature at the University of Bremen in 2006. Zimmermann has emerged for two decades with a number of well-respected books and biographies about Günter Grass, Friedrich Schlegel, Friedrich Gentz, and Friedrich Sieburg. Since his retirement in 2014, he has been working as a non-fiction author and freelance journalist for newspapers, magazines and radio. He is co-editor of the Hamburg edition of the works of Siegfried Lenz ['The Model' (2018), 'The Loss' (2019) and 'The Rejection' (2020)]. Harro Zimmermann is married to Margot Zimmermann, née Rothenbusch, and the couple have a son.
