Harry Angier Hoffner, Jr.

Harry Angier Hoffner, Jr. (born November 27, 1934 in Jacksonville (Florida) , † March 10, 2015 in Hilton Head Island , South Carolina ) was an American ancient orientalist specializing in Hittology .

Life

Hoffner first studied theology and classical studies at Princeton University , Dallas Theological Seminary and Brandeis University , where he finally received his doctorate in 1963. This was followed by a teaching position in Hebraistics and Biblical theology at Illinois' Wheaton College , before taking up a professorship in ancient Anatolian studies at Brandeis University a year after completing his doctorate . In 1969 he was appointed as an associate professor of Assyriology and Hittiteology at Yale , before he finally received a chair in Hittiteology at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago in 1974 . There he worked until his retirement on the Chicago Hittite Dictionary, which was founded together with Hans Gustav Güterbock and is still unfinished today .
