Harry Bates

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harry Bates (born October 9, 1900 in Pittsburgh , † September 1981 in New York City ; actually Hiram Gilmore Bates III ) was an American publisher and writer of science fiction .

Life

Bates worked for William Clayton Publishing in the 1920s as the editor of various pulp magazines . In 1930 the publisher decided to enter the increasingly popular science fiction genre. This is how the Astounding Stories of Super Science magazine was founded. Bates became its first editor. He also edited the Strange Tales comic book series and remained in those positions until March 1933 when Clayton-Verlag went bankrupt. Astounding was later taken over by John W. Campbell , who made it the leading SF magazine under the name Astounding Science Fiction .

During his time as an editor, Bates wrote SF stories himself. Together with Desmond Hall he wrote a number of very successful stories about the space hero Hawk Carse , which appeared under a common pseudonym ( Anthony Gilmore , sometimes HB Winter ). A few more short stories appeared in the 1930s. His undoubtedly best-known story is Farewell to the Master (German: Farewell to the Lord , later also The day on which the earth stood still ), which appeared in Astounding in 1940 and on which the film The day on which the earth stood still from 1951 (a Remake was released in 2008) is based. However, Bates only received $ 500 for selling the film rights.

According to his own statements, he attached more importance to an exciting and entertaining story than to scientific correctness. His novel Space Hawk was published in 1952, and two short stories in 1953; later publications are not known.

In 1960, Bates was unable to work because of progressive arthritis . For the rest of his life he lived on government support .

In 1976 he was awarded the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award .
