Harry Bischoff Weiss (born October 31, 1883 in Philadelphia , PA ; married to Grace M. Ziegler in 1958 , † July 4, 1972 ) was an American entomologist and author .

Life

In 1912, Weiss became an entomologist in the New Jersey Department of Agriculture . He observed the plague of the Japanese beetles ( Popillia japonica ), which began in Dreer's Nursery , Riverton , NJ, by the accidental introduction of roses . He spared no effort and conducted studies to control these beetles, which have no natural predators in the United States. Weiss became director of the New Jersey Division of Plant Industry in 1920 and held that post until his retirement in 1956. After being friends with Grace M. Ziegler for many years, he married her in 1958. A man of immortal curiosity and interests, Weiss was never forgotten in New Jersey.

Weiss became interested in literature and history early on in his career . His first publication was Ancient Beliefs Concerning Insects , published in the Bulletin of the Brooklyn Entomological Society (now the New York Entomological Society ), Vol. 8, No. 2, appeared. Almost all of his first manuscripts and publications were about plants and entomology. In 1930 Weiss worked with Charles Frederick Heartman (1883–1953) The American Book Collector , which they both published in the same year. Together with Grace M. Ziegler he wrote the monograph Thomas Say , which is about the father of American entomology. This cooperation began in 1927 and both became friends very quickly, if only because they had very similar interests. From now on, Weiss explained much of his official services and his interests in several works, such as B. about the brood of rattlesnakes or about Little Red Riding Hood . This work has appeared in countless publications, but also in the New York Public Library Bulletin and in private manuscripts. In 1947 Weiss published his first work for the New Jersey Agricultural Society , Trenton , and thus began a long-term relationship with this organization for the production of an annual publication. After retiring from the State Department of Agriculture, Weiss and Ziegler founded The Past Time Press , a private publishing company , which made them very popular. There they published a monograph every year. In 1964 Grace M. Weiss published a strictly limited edition of a bibliography by her husband from 1912 to 1964, A Bibliography of Harry B. Weiss for the Years 1912 to 1964 . Since Weiss was still publishing after 1964, he completed this work with a list of his publications after 1964, this list comprises 804 items (articles, manuscripts and monographs). Eventually they gave up the publishing house in 1967, but continued to write for the Agricultural Society until Weiss' death in 1972. After his death, his last work for the Society, Whaling in New Jersey , was published in 1974 ; his last manuscript was about the soap and candle industry in New Jersey. Many of his manuscripts can now be found at Rutgers University , New Jersey's State University, and the Library of Congress .
