Occasionally he was involved as a musician in productions of the orchestra, which was "wound up" in 1992. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , Nicolai worked to ensure that jazz became an indispensable part of the MDR program. He also composed dance music for the Leipzig Radio Dance Orchestra; the Manfred Ludwig sextet took up his composition "Zweck". As a singer he interpreted “But I don't know your heart” (1968), accompanied by Klaus Lenz and his band, and “Heart Lost” (1968) with the Walter Kubiczeck orchestra .
