Hartmann von Landsberg († January 13, 1340 in Oberwesel ) was a clergyman from the Alsatian noble family von Landsberg, based in the castle of the same name .

Origin and work

He was born the son of Walter Hacker von Landsberg and his wife, one of Rathsamhausen . The place of birth is likely to have been the paternal family castle.

Hartmann von Landsberg embarked on a spiritual career and was among the prince-bishops Walram von Veldenz , Balduin von Luxemburg and Gerhard von Ehrenberg , Speyer cathedral dean . Hardly anything is known about his work; he was canon and dean of the cathedral in Speyer . The first written mention of the Speyer cathedral dean dates from January 10, 1331.

On the south-eastern nave portal of the Speyer Cathedral , a contemporary memorial inscription has been preserved in the door jambs, which records his death for January 13, 1340.

Apparently he died in Oberwesel, because he was buried in the Liebfrauenkirche there, where there is also his splendid grave slab with its relief. He appears here as a priest in Messkasel , carrying a chalice and the biretta on his head. The coat of arms of the Alsatian Landsberg (divided across with Sechsberg in the upper field) and the Rathsamhausen are carved over it. The date of death recorded there differs by exactly one year (1339), but this is caused by different calendars. The correct year of death given in Speyer is 1340. The background of the cathedral dean's trip to Oberwesel and the cause of his death have not yet been clarified.
