Hartwig Thyen (born April 21, 1927 in Varel ; † July 2, 2015 ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Darmstadt , Thyen studied Protestant theology at the Universities of Mainz and Marburg and received his doctorate in Marburg under Rudolf Bultmann with the thesis "The Style of the Jewish-Hellenistic Homily" . He then worked as a pastor in Brake (Unterweser) . In 1966 he completed his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg with "Studies on the forgiveness of sins in the New Testament and its Old Testament and Jewish requirements" . Afterwards he was a lecturer and from 1971 to 1992 professor for New Testament theology in Heidelberg.

Thyen was the last direct student of Rudolf Bultmann and inherited his notes on the Gospel of John . From this estate he published a. a. the first contact between Bultmann and Karl Barth , which is missing in the correspondence of the Barth Complete Edition. He was one of the best experts on Johannine theology. He read the Gospel of John as a literary unit and explained it as a legacy of the Jewish Christian tradition , which probably already knew the Gospel of Luke and consciously referred to it.

From 1949 Hartwig Thyen was married to Gisela Thyen, née Wragge. They had a son and three daughters. Thyen last lived in Neckarbischofsheim and still moved there, together with his wife, into the senior citizens ' center of the Workers' Samaritan Association .
