Harvey Monroe Hall

Harvey Monroe Hall (born March 29, 1874 in Lee County , Illinois , † March 11, 1932 in Washington, DC ) was an American botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " HMHall ".

Early years

Hall was born in Lee County, Illinois, but grew up near Riverside , California . He became interested in nature at an early age, so he began studying botany at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1901 he received the title of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and in 1902 that of a Master of Science (M.Sc.) In 1906 he completed his doctoral thesis and received the title of Ph.D.

Working life

From 1902 to 1919 Hall was professionally associated with the University of California. From 1902 he was botany assistant in the department for agricultural experiments, in 1903 he became an instructor there. In 1908 he was appointed deputy professor for business botany and in 1915 full professor.

In 1919, Hall moved to the Carnegie Institution for Science , Plant Biology Department, at Stanford University . He was there professor of botany and curator of the herbarium of the University of California. He held both posts until his death in 1932.

In 1927 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1928, Hall, who was involved in genetics , made sure that his colleague Jens Christian Clausen returned to the United States and worked with him on the genetics and ecology of native plant species.

Private life

In 1910, Harvey Monroe Hall married his colleague Carlotta Case , who had graduated from the University of California with a degree in botany in 1905.

Harvey Monroe Hall died on March 11, 1932 while traveling in Washington, DC at the age of 58.

Social Commitment

Hall was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Californian Academy of Sciences and a corresponding member of various learned societies in Europe.

Honors

The genera Halliophytum I.M.Johnst are named after him . from the family of the milkweed family (Euphorbiaceae) and Harmonia B.G.Baldwin from the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae).
