The Haspeler Brücke is a road bridge over the Wupper in the Wuppertal district of Barmen . The steel bridge connects Haspeler Straße south of the Wupper in Unterbarmen with the northern right bank of the river with the streets Hofkamp and Hardtufer , which are in the Elberfeld district. The bridge, built between 1902 and 1903, is one of the oldest truss bridges in Wuppertal.

Until 1929, the border between the two then still independent cities of Barmen and Elberfeld ran on the bridge. In the Middle Ages there was a ford in the Wupper at the same point . The Furter Hof , mentioned in 1466, was located next to the ford on the southern side of the Wuppertal ; today the street Furter Hof commemorates him . The Elberfelder Landwehr ran from Ostersbaum over the Hardtberg to the southern heights . There is evidence of a turnstile (= " reel ") at the ford in the 16th century . This narrow passage for pedestrians in the Landwehr led to the naming.

In 1729 the first stone bridge was destroyed by ice drift. In the Seven Years' War there was fighting between the French and the general Ferdinand Hereditary Prince of Braunschweig in 1759 . In 1796, during the First Coalition War , the bridge was again the scene of French and Prussian conflicts. The Prussian Lieutenant von Hakke was able to arrange for the French General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan to move the demarcation line a little west to the Haspeler Bridge.

There is an anecdote related to this bridge (probably a predecessor to the current construction). During his visit in October 1900, Kaiser Wilhelm II is said to have said to his wife during a carriage ride from Barmer to the Elberfeld side: “ Auguste, put your hat on, we're coming to town! "Another version reads:" Gustchen, straighten your hat, we're coming to town now ". This still annoys many a barmer today. It is unclear how this alleged quote was passed down, because it is doubtful that this carriage ride took place.

Haspeler Brücke was entered on January 20, 2005 under the number 4217 in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal. The renovation measures planned at the time, after which considerable corrosion damage and other defects were found in 2003, were agreed with the lower monument authority and completed at the end of 2006. The scope of the renovation was then calculated at 615,000 euros.
