Hatem Trabelsi ( Arabic حاتم الطرابلسي, DMG Ḥātim at-Ṭarābulusī ) (born January 25, 1977 in Aryanah ) is a former Tunisian football player .

Career

Trabelsi was born in Aryanah but grew up in Sfax . He started his career at CS Sfax , where he first played as a striker . When CS Sfax lost numerous players due to injuries, Trabelsi had to fill in all the gaps. He was put on the defensive and quickly settled into that position and became a regular. In 2001 he moved to Europe to the Dutch top club Ajax Amsterdam .

During the preparation for the 2004 season he was invited to a trial by Arsenal FC under coach Arsène Wenger . Apparently he impressed the "Gunners" and a transfer between Ajax Amsterdam and Arsenal FC was agreed. For personal reasons, however, Trabelsi let the signing of the contract with Arsenal fail; instead he returned to Ajax Amsterdam.

In 2006 he received offers from several English clubs. He joined Manchester City on August 10 on a free transfer. Injuries and a lack of a work permit threw him back. As a result, he could celebrate his debut in the new team on September 11 against Reading FC .

Since December 2006 Trabelsi has played the most games for Manchester City in central midfield. He scored his first goal against Manchester United . With his weaker left foot he was able to overcome Edwin van der Sar . His team still lost the game 1: 3. From time to time it became apparent that Trabelsi would give his regular place to younger players, such as B. Micah Richards or Nedum Onuoha . He stopped playing for Manchester City after beating Newcastle United 1-0 in March, and so it was that his contract was not renewed at the end of the season. When he stopped playing for Manchester City, he received offers from the French club UC Le Mans and the Italian club SSC Napoli . A commitment to these clubs did not materialize.

After half a year without a club, Trabelsi moved to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in November 2007 .

National team

Trabelsi made his debut for the Tunisian national team in May 1998, just before the 1998 World Cup . He also played every game for the Tunisian national team at the 2002 World Cup and 2006 World Cup . Likewise at the Africa Cup 2004 , which Tunisia won. After Tunisia left the 2006 World Cup, Trabelsi ended his national team career at the age of 29. By then he had played 61 games and scored 1 goal.
