Micah Lincoln Richards (born June 24, 1988 in Birmingham ) is a former English football player who played ten years as a professional for Manchester City and last played in defense at Aston Villa until 2019 . He could be used in central defense, as a right full-back or in defensive midfield.

Career

society

As a child, Richards played for the Leeds City Boys. Scouts noticed his talent early on. At the age of twelve he finally moved to Oldham Athletic . Just a year later, in 2001, he was transferred to Manchester City . Oldham secured 20% of the defender's resale. For the Citizens, Richards went through the junior teams until 2005, before he was accepted into the professional squad in summer 2005. He finally made his debut against Arsenal on October 22 when he was substituted on. For the first time over 90 minutes on the field he was on February 12, 2006 against Charlton Athletic . From then on he earned himself a regular place and at the end of the season was voted “Best young player of the club of the 2005/06 season”. After other clubs showed interest in the youngster, he signed a new four-year contract with Manchester on July 25, 2006. Good performances were followed by better and better performances. In August 2007, Richards was named “Player of the Month” in the Premier League . During the absence of Richard Dunne , he took him on September 16, 2007 for the first time as captain of his team. This made him the youngest captain of the club, replacing Steve Redmond . In February 2008, his contract was prematurely extended to summer 2013. Shortly afterwards, the defender was injured and was no longer fit for the rest of the season. In qualifying for the UEFA Cup on July 17, 2008, he made his comeback over 90 minutes. During the game against West Ham United in August of that year, Richards collided with his club-mate Tal Ben Haim and was then unconscious for eight minutes. Contrary to all impressions, the collision was not dangerous.

On September 1, 2014, Richards moved to the Italian Serie A at Fiorentina on loan until the end of the 2014/15 season .

After the 2014/15 season, he left Manchester City on a free transfer and joined Aston Villa , where he signed a four-year deal. There, however, his severe knee problems were his undoing. In October 2016 he played his last professional game before announcing the end of his active career a good three years later in the summer of 2019.

National team

He made his debut for the English national team on November 15, 2006 against the Netherlands . At this point, Richards had only played 28 competitive games for his club team. Gary Neville's injury slipped the talented defender into the team's starting line-up. As a result, he replaced Rio Ferdinand as the youngest used defender in the national team. His first goal was on September 8, 2007 in the Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel .

Others

  • On the homepage of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Richards has his own column in which he reports on his life as a footballer.
