history

Remains of the surrounding walls of the courtyard
Information board and the former agricultural area east of the courtyard to NES26

The farm Hauenstein was a noble Freigut (freed from manorial duties and services Good) of Messrs Sittig and Hans Wilhelm Rapp. It was first mentioned in a document in 1580. The courtyard is in the shape of a square, surrounded by a wall and a moat. In 1611 it was sold to the noble Otto Heinrich von Bastheim with a size of 220 acres . Heinrich leased the property on. Georg Büx (1605) and Wilhelm Reinhard (1615) are named tenants. The arable land was to the north and east of the farm.

In 1636 the farm was pledged to the Juliusspital in Würzburg . The building fell into disrepair due to neglect and a fire during the Thirty Years War . In 1630 the farm was abandoned, but without any direct war damage. In 1672, after an advance payment of 100 Reichstalers, the farm became the property of the Juliusspital and was bought by the community at an auction for 2000 Franconian guilders , probably because the cost of reopening it was considered too great . Remnants of buildings and a cellar entrance are said to have been visible as late as the 19th century .

Today, only old paths from the Hochrhön plateau and from Hausen in the valley , remnants of the stone enclosure and an information board remind of the desolate hamlet .

Hauenstein hill climb

The desert is the namesake of the Hauenstein Hill Climb , which has been held since 1969 , which starts in a lowland between Hausen and Rüdenschrecken and ends at the Rhönhof . The hill climb will take place on the nearby county road NES 26 and partly on the county road NES 27 .
