Residential and commercial building

The living / commercial building main road 26 is in the district of Rheydt in Mönchengladbach ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ).

The building was built in 1960. It was entered under No. H 109 on August 1, 2011 in the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach .

location

The residential and commercial building at Hauptstrasse 26 represents a head building within the ridge development of the Hauptstrasse in Rheydt and at the same time forms the western boundary of the confluence of Harmoniestrasse and Hauptstrasse, opposite the following Hauptstrasse 30 (head building), Harmoniestrasse 1, Harmoniestrasse 3 on the east side.

architecture

It is a broad, five-storey low-rise building, the long side with 8 + 1 axes to Harmoniestraße, the front side with four axes to the main street, there on the ground floor according to the superordinate conception of the shopping street with an outer, covered passage behind pillars. Towards Harmoniestraße (and the passage on Hauptstraße), the ground floor is open to a large extent in the two right-hand axes in shop windows (substance changed), the subsequent axes have a closed, dark panel cladding in which small-format, slightly protruding showcases with gold anodized frames are inserted .

Above the ground floor, the building again shows, similar to Harmoniestraße 3, the characteristic mixture of white painted and slightly protruding reinforced concrete grid, lying (here in a ratio of approx. 1: 2: 1 three-part) window formats and dominant red parapet fields , which are designed with diamond patterns , but this time again divided into horizontal and vertical triangular fields by colored areas (red-gray). The axis above the passage is flat without a window to accommodate advertising.

The confluence of Harmoniestraße with Hauptstraße was initially planned as a covered passage, also to emphasize the plaza-like character of Harmoniestraße at this point. In 1952 there were still concrete considerations for such a construction project with overbuilding of the confluence (client: Paul Wallraf); In 1953, despite the involvement of Hans Schwippert as an appraiser, the building owner rejected a corresponding building application , which, because initially only planned for a single storey, feared an "interim building" that would become independent. In 1957/58 there were plans for a department store on the property ( Woolworth ; client: Hans Wallraf; architect: Paul Bernert), which was also not carried out, but whose basic concept as a large five-storey cube already corresponded to the building that was then realized in 1960/61.

The first floor of the house was originally a grocery supermarket, while the building application provided for a total of 22 apartments on the four upper floors .

The determination of the monument value is limited to the exterior. This concerns the basic cubic form as an integral part of the superordinate urban development figure of the ridge development, as well as the original substance, proportions and ornamentation .

As part of the above-mentioned reconstruction ensemble, the house at Hauptstrasse 26 is important for Rheydt, City of Mönchengladbach. Preservation and use of its exterior, the facade in substance, proportions and ornamentation as well as the basic cubic shape of the building are in the public interest for scientific, architectural, historical and urban planning reasons. According to § 2 of the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) NRW, it is therefore a monument to the extent specified .
