from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lords of Montfaucon were a noble Burgundian family. From 1163 to 1397 they were Counts of Montbéliard (Mömpelgard).

history

The lords of Montfaucon have been the owners of the castle in Montfaucon near Besançon since the middle of the 11th century . They were vassals of the Count Palatine of Burgundy . In 1119 they contributed through rich foundations to the establishment of the Cistercian monastery Bellevaux , the first Cistercian monastery in Franche-Comté, as its daughter monastery they founded the monastery Lützel in 1123/24 . Amadeus II inherited the County of Mömpelgard in 1163 . In 1168 he acquired half of the Orbe lordship and (probably through marriage to Beatrix von Grandson) the Montagny-le-Corbe lordship , thereby laying the foundations for the family's Vaudois property.

Amadeus' son Walter took part in the Fourth Crusade , became constable of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and regent of the Kingdom of Cyprus . After the death of Richard III. his sons shared the property in 1229. Dietrich received Mömpelgard, his younger brother the Vaudois possessions, Orbe , Montagny-le-Corbe and Echallens ; In 1255 he also acquired the other half of Orbe.

Dietrich bequeathed Montbéliard to his great-granddaughter Guillemette of Neuchâtel and her husband Rainald of Burgundy in 1282. Through the marriage of Rainald's daughter Agnes to Heinrich I from the younger line, the County of Mömpelgard came back into the property of the House of Montfaucon in 1320. Heinrich's son Stephan was the last of his line. After his death in 1397 Mömpelgard fell to Henriette , the daughter of Stephen's son Heinrich , who died in 1396 in the Battle of Nicopolis . Through Henriette's marriage to Count Eberhard IV , the county came to the House of Württemberg. Through the marriage of Henriettes sister Johanna to Ludwig II of Chalon-Arly, the Vaudois possessions fell to the Chalon family .

The family provided three Archbishops of Besançon :
