Warn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Warenne were one of the most important families in England from the Norman conquest of England until the mid-12th century. They made the first three Earls of Surrey . The title is often referred to as Earl of Warenne , possibly because William had little land in Surrey .

The progenitor of the Warenne was Rodulf I de Warenna, who was wealthy in Varennes in what is now the Seine-Maritime department ( Normandy ). His son Guillaume I fought at the Battle of Hastings and was rewarded with the title of Earl of Surrey in 1088.

After the 3rd Earl fell on the Second Crusade off Laodikeia , the title passed to the husbands of his daughter Isabelle. Her first husband was Wilhelm von Blois , son of King Stephen , the second husband was Hamelin de Warenne , a half-brother of King Henry II. Hamelin took the name Warenne and his son, grandson and great-great-grandchild later bore both the title and the name .

With a branch line, the family died out at the beginning of the 13th century.
