Mahmoud Hawari

Mahmoud Hawari ( Arabic محمود هواري, DMG Maḥmūd Hawārī , Hebrew מחמוד הווארי, * around 1953 in Tarshiha , Israel ) is a Palestinian archaeologist .

Hawari graduated from the University of London with a PhD . From 2004 to 2007 he lectured at the University of Oxford . Then he taught at al-Quds University and at Bethlehem University . From 2009 to 2012 he was visiting professor at the University of Bir Zait .

Hawari directed several archaeological projects in Palestine, including the restoration of the palace of the Hisham from 2009 to 2014 . He participated in various international projects, including Museum Without Borders projects and the 12-Country Euro-Mediterranean Project from 1996 to 2000.

Hawari was a curator at the British Museum in London . He was a research fellow at the Khalili Research Center, Oxford University. His specialties are Islamic art, architecture and archeology of the premodern Middle East . He is an expert in the management and museology of the Palestinian cultural heritage.

His main interests are the Ayyubid , Mamluk, and Ottoman periods. He researches the transition from antiquity to early Islamic culture, in particular the Umayyad desert palaces .

Since 2004 he has been an advisor to the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) for sites nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

Hawari was appointed General Director of the National Palestinian Museum in Bir Zait north of Ramallah in the West Bank in 2016 .
