Leverius Potter

Hebelius (Haebele) Potter (* 1768 in Dokkum , Fryslån Province , Netherlands ; † April 18, 1824 Surabaya , Java , then Dutch East Indies , now: Indonesia ) was a Frisian preacher and travel writer .

Life

Potter went into voluntary internal exile in 1795 because of the Jacobean activities in North West Friesland. He was also confronted with acts of violence abroad. On his first trip to South Africa , he took part in a sea battle between English and French or Dutch ships. He was taken to Plymouth and later to London as a prisoner of war . There he went to work for the Dutch community in 1806. Back in the Netherlands he became assistant preacher in Amsterdam in 1807 .

From June 11, 1810 to 1818, Potter was pastor in Hanau . It is possible that he was already in Hanau in 1809. On October 30, 1813, the day of the Battle of Hanau, he had to hide from the French troops.

After 1818 Potter moved to the Dutch East Indies, where he died in 1824. His wife, A. Visscher, died on February 10, 1856 and is buried in Probolingo .
