Hector Gratton
Joseph Thomas Hector Gratton (born August 13, 1900 in Hull , Québec , † July 16, 1970 in Montreal ) was a Canadian composer, arranger, conductor and music teacher.
Gratton studied piano with Alphonse Martin and Alfred La Liberté and music theory with Oscar O'Brien , Alfred Whitehead and Albertine Morin-Labrecque . In the 1920s he worked as an arranger and piano accompanist for the folk singer Charles Marchand , with whom he performed at the Canadian Folk Song and Handicraft Festivals from 1927 to 1930 in Quebec.
During the global economic crisis he devoted himself to the newly emerging radio and appeared in Félix Leclerc's radio series Je me souviens . With his symphonic poem Légende , which he published under the pseudonym Ben Marcato , he received the Jean Lallemand Prize in 1937 . The work was performed again in the same year in a subscription concert conducted by Wilfrid Pelletier and the following year by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under Ernest MacMillan . In 1945 the music for Cécile Chabot's Christmas story L'Imagerie was composed and broadcast on the CBC radio . Gratton also wrote the music for the film Un homme et son péché (1949).
