Hedda Theen-Pontoppidan (born April 23, 1912 in Hamburg ; † October 11, 2013 ) was a German painter , draftsman and restorer of North German folk art .

Life

Hedda Pontoppidan was born on April 23, 1912 in Hamburg as the daughter of the Pontoppidan merchants. At the age of five she received her first private drawing lessons in her parents' house, and since 1928 she has been receiving lessons in nude and portraiture at the State Art School in Hamburg alongside school . In 1929 she made the decision to become a painter. In 1930 he studied figurative drawing and painting at the Hamburg State Art School. Soon afterwards she received a scholarship from the Erdwin Amsinck Foundation, Hamburg.

In 1932, at the age of 20, she attended a course with the painter Hans Holtorf in Langballig near the Flensburg Fjord, Schleswig-Holstein. Those eight weeks became five years. There she met her future husband Lutz Theen, also a student of Holtorf. In 1937 and 1938 she attended the private art school Oswald Malura in Munich, but returned to Schleswig-Holstein and in 1940 married her colleague Lutz Theen. Their son Carsten Theen was born on March 11, 1944. He died in a traffic accident in 1970.

The economic circumstances of the Theen couple remained modest for many years, they lived as sublet in cramped conditions in Langballig. However, in 1967 and with the help of a financial contribution from the House of Pontoppidan, they succeeded in acquiring the old village smithy in Nordballig, a small town nearby. It comprised a residential building and a forge building that was converted into a studio and exhibition space.

Over the years and decades he created numerous oil and tempera pictures and drawings of the landscape of fishing on the Flensburg Fjord . Many old farm furniture and household items, especially wooden hat boxes, have been restored and painted by her.

Preferred techniques were tempera painting on primed paper as well as primed cardboard and large-format sepia drawings on primed paper. If her teacher Holtorf was still expressionistic , Hedda Theen followed the impressionist view more strongly , but combined it with the layered painting technique of the old masters .

Influences

She harbored particular admiration for Vincent van Gogh and Frans Hals .
