Hedwig Schlichter , in Argentine exile Hedy Crilla or Krilla (born September 26, 1898 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; † March 31, 1984 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) was an Austrian actress , director , theater director and acting teacher.

Life

Hedwig Schlichter received her artistic training at Vienna's Academy for Music and Performing Arts . In 1920 she went to the Szczecin City Theater. Other theater stations were Vienna, Munich , Leipzig and Berlin , where she appeared at the theater in Klosterstrasse, among others. Between 1929 and 1933 Schlichter received supporting roles in several German films. Engaged in 1933 at the Deutsches Theater and the Deutsches Künstlertheater , the Austrian artist received only one follow-up engagement in Germany, from the theater on Stresemannstrasse, before the National Socialistswas excluded from gaming. The Jewish artist then decided to emigrate .

Schlichter first went to Paris , where she appeared at the Cercle Culturel Autrichien alongside Leon Askin . In 1939 she emigrated to Argentina. In Buenos Aires she called herself Hedy Crilla and continued to play theater. In the beginning she preferred to perform at Paul Walter Jacobs ’ emigrant venue Freie Deutsche Bühne ( Teatro alemán independiente ). There she was successful in pieces by Somerset Maughams , Lillian Hellmans and Henrik Ibsens . Hedy Crilla also appeared sporadically with small parts in Argentinian films. The actress also directed theater and gave acting lessons. In doing so, she was guided by the teaching methods of Stanislawski and Strasberg .

From 1947 Hedy Crilla ran a children's theater and founded the Escuela de Arte Escénico de la Sociedad Hebraica Argentina, a training center for theater artists. She also continued to direct plays, including Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening in 1976 and David Edgard's Mary Barnes in 1982 . In 1977 she gave her farewell performance as an actress. Hedwig "Hedy" Schlichter / Crilla, who occasionally changed her Spanish spelling to "Krilla", has also worked in Argentinian television productions.
