Heeßel is a village in Lower Saxony that belongs to Hemmoor in the district of Cuxhaven .

history

The place was first mentioned around 1500 as the property of the monastery in Himmelpforten with four campfire sites . The name is derived from the fact that the place is located in an area of Ice Age sand hills, where numerous hazelnut bushes grew. Over time, the name Haselloh (Haselwald) became Heeßel. Today's districts of Wedelsforth, Pulvermühle and Schuppenfeld as well as the town of Heeßel have emerged from the four fireplaces. The district of Schuppenfeld still had its own field market around 1690. Later in the Swedish times, several storage sheds were built here in the Feldmark. Powder was still being made in the Heeßel mill in the first half of the 18th century. Around 1750 the powder mill was a grain mill, and only the name has remained to this day. The cemetery was laid out around 1831.
