Hydriomena furcata 01

The blueberry palm spanner ( Hydriomena furcata ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae).

features

This very variable type of tensioner is difficult to describe in general, as its color changes from olive green to gray, gray-brown and reddish-brown. The banding is red-brown to blackish with whitish spots and dark speckles. At the front edge of the wing, the outer transverse line kinks clearly inwards, which is clearly visible on the underside. This is an important differentiator from similar species.

The jaw probes are 1.5 times shorter than the diameter of the eyes. The wingspan of the moth is 23 to 35 millimeters.

The caterpillars are dorsally dark gray and ventrally dark red with white side stripes. Young caterpillars spin shoot tips, older ones spin leaves of the food plant together, in which they then rest during the day.

Similar species

The immense variability in drawing and coloring led to the fact that Hydriomena furcata described many taxonomically worthless forms. In spite of its great variability, the blueberry palpette differs so significantly from the two similar species Hydriomena ruberata and Hydriomena impluviata in terms of the drawing structure that dark shapes can also be identified. The blueberry palpebrach is drawn more restlessly than the alder palpebrachio ( Hydriomena impluviata ), which also flies earlier (May – July).

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The blueberry snout is common in blueberry forests and moor areas in subalpine and montane regions. The overall distribution extends from the Iberian Peninsula across Western and Central Europe eastwards to East Asia and also in North America .

biology

The main flight time of the moths in southern Germany extends from late June to early August – September. The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and fly to light . The females usually lay their eggs in small groups on the underside of the leaves of blueberries ( Vaccinium myrtillus ).

The caterpillars can be found in wetlands, forests and moors from spring to early July and feed on bilberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus ) or willow ( Salix caprea ), hazel ( Corylus avellana ), roses ( Rosa sp. ), Aspen ( Populus tremula ) u. a. The egg or the caterpillar that has already developed in the egg overwinters and is fully grown in May. It lives in a casing made of leaves that are spun together.

Moths and caterpillars avoid dry spots.

In some years both the moth and the caterpillar occur en masse.
