The Heidesee in Kirchheller Heide is a 34- hectare quarry pond in the Grafenwald district of the Kirchhellen district of Bottrop in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The Heidesee goes back to a gravel pit operated by the Becker company in the 20th century . In the immediate east there are two smaller, nameless ponds. After the end of the gravel mining, the lake was designed with several islands and the environment for natural recreation in the interests of biotope and species protection .
There are hiking trails around the lake . A car park for the Kirchheller Heide recreation area is located about 250 meters from the east bank. The lake is used for fishing and partly - despite the ban - also for swimming.
Since the beginning of 2011, the west dam has been reinforced by a sheet pile wall . This precautionary measure by RAG , which costs around 400,000 euros, is intended to prevent the lake from running out due to subsidence in the mining area of the Prosper-Haniel hard coal mine .

In the Heidesee there are five species of chandelier algae (Characeae) due to the underwater vegetation that is bound to poorer nutrients . The lake is therefore of national importance as a habitat .
Together with its two neighboring bodies of water and some surrounding areas, it forms the approximately 54 hectare FFH area DE-4407-303 Heidesee in the Kirchheller Heide . This makes the area part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . In addition, the Heidesee, like the Heidhofsee , about 1.5 km away , is located in the Kirchheller Heide landscape protection area established in 1973 .
