Heiko Kroeger
Heiko Kröger (born March 27, 1966 in Waldbröl ) is a German sailor . He starts for the North German Regatta Club .
After starting out in the laser, he sails in the 2.4mR class today . This boat is particularly suitable for handicapped sailors (Kröger was born without a left forearm), although he did not have any special modifications made to his boat.
At the Paralympics 2000 in Sydney he won the gold medal in this boat class. He was also world champion with disabilities from 1999 to 2002, and in 2001 also world champion over-all. This means that he won the world title on a regatta course where disabled and non-disabled people competed against each other. Kröger was 2001 Sportsman of the Year in Schleswig-Holstein . In the same year he received the sports plaque of the state of Schleswig-Holstein and was also nominated for the World Sailor of the Year Award . He had numerous other successes on a national and international level.
Kröger carried the German flag at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens . This was the first time that a representative of the sport of sailing had been the standard bearer.
With second place at the World Championships in July 2010 in Medemblik , the Netherlands , Heiko Kröger secured the German starting place for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London . There he won the silver medal.
