history

Holy Spirit Church, Reichenau Island, church from the southeast

For the evangelicals who had settled on Reichenau from the end of the 19th century, a public worship room was available for the first time since Ascension Day, May 18, 1939, in the refectory of the former Reichenau monastery . Today this baroque decorated hall serves the community of Reichenau as a council hall and wedding room.

In 1961 the construction of the Evangelical Holy Spirit Church based on a design by Herbert Kölsch (Reichenau / Konstanz) began; the executing architect was Wolfgang Wößner (Reichenau). Harry MacLean was responsible for the artistic conception . After the first groundbreaking on August 27th and the laying of the foundation stone on October 1st, 1961, the topping-out ceremony was held on March 2nd, 1962. The building was finally inaugurated on July 14, 1963.

From 1964 on, the Protestant Christians on the island and the Reichenau mainland were part of the Reichenau-Litzelstetten-Mainau parish. An independent parish was established in 1986, and the pastor's post, which was newly established in 1994, has been filled for the first time since June 1996 by Pastor Holger Müller.

The rectory on Rauhofweg and the parish hall by the church were built between the end of September 1999 and the beginning of December 2000. At the same time, external renovation work and energy-saving measures were carried out on the church, such as the first roof insulation, a facade renovation and the installation of a central gas heating for the church, rectory and parish hall. In addition, a 105-module photovoltaic system was installed on the church roof between 2000 and 2001 in cooperation with the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany and private individuals. A fundamental interior renovation of the church followed in 2010, with rooms for a second group of cribs being built in. The first nursery group has been working in the parish hall since 2007, after a playgroup work had existed since 2001.

inner space

Holy Spirit Church, Reichenau Island, altar wall

The entire artistic interior was created by the Heidelberg artist Harry MacLean .

The entrance portal of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche is made up of two copper plates that surround the wooden cores of the two door leaves. On them the seven angels described in Rev 8 :EU are represented with trumpets, which precede the Last Judgment and the new creation of heaven and earth.

Stained glass window

In keeping with the name of the church, the images of the stained glass windows in the eastern wall of the choir are under the leitmotif of the Holy Spirit:

The round window above the altar shows the dove of the Holy Spirit, which - surrounded by a ring of fire - pours down vertically from above. In the window to the left or north of the altar, the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by John the Baptist is shown, who is attended by five kneeling baptismal witnesses. The robe that John the Baptist wears is reminiscent of a carnival robe that is widespread in the Lake Constance region, the fool's hat . The window to the right or south of the altar shows the event of Pentecost and depicts the disciples of Jesus with tongues of fire over their heads.

In the stained glass panes of the eight windows on the northern and southern sides of the nave, abstract rectangles in different colors can be seen. Overall, this results in a light composition according to which the interior is brightened from back to front or from west to east. In this way, the lighting concept of the Holy Spirit Church is based on that of Gothic churches .

Furnishing

Both the shape and the design of the altar table of the Holy Spirit Church are based on the description and “building instructions” of the Ark of the Israelites in Ex 25.10–16  EU . Three metal antependia made of bronze with rings are hung on the altar table . They depict verses from the Gospel of John, the words of which are arranged around a symbol. In this way, on the left antependium the verse “In the beginning was the word” ( Joh 1,1  LUT ) around an open Bible, on the middle “And the word became flesh” ( Joh 1,14  LUT ) around a manger as well on the right “And the light shines in the darkness” ( Joh 1,5  LUT ) grouped around a fire flame.

The late Gothic crucifix on the altar dates from the first quarter of the 16th century. Before the Holy Spirit Church was built, it hung in the Chapel of Grace at the Reichenau Center for Psychiatry until 1963 .

The pulpit cage is reminiscent of a ship's lookout or mast cage due to its round shape and a surrounding, flat railing. To this end, on the outside of the pulpit there is a representation made of brass of the fishing trip of Simon Peter on the Sea of Galilee, which is described in Lk 5.1-11  EU and on which Jesus called his first disciples.

The baptismal stand stands in the form of a ball, which symbolizes the earth, directly on the central axis in front of the altar. A Coptic cross is erected on the sphere , the outline of which can also be interpreted as a person with outstretched arms.

organ

The Walcker organ of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche originally comes from the Wollmatinger Christ Church and was built in 1949. In July 1964 she was transferred from Wollmatingen to the Heilig-Geist-Kirche, whereby her prospectus was adapted to the interior architecture of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. At the end of 1998 the organ was extensively renovated and has since been used for church music events.

Bells

The Holy Spirit Church has three bells. These were cast on June 15, 1962 at the Heinrich Kurtz bell foundry in Stuttgart and consecrated together with the church on July 14, 1963. The sound shutters on the church tower were only installed in the course of the external renovation work in 2000, until then the belfry was freely visible from the west and east.
