Holy Cross Church

The Holy Cross Church is a Catholic parish church in Offenburg . At 68.44 meters, it is the tallest building in the city.

history

The current church was built at the end of the 17th century. It stands on the foundation walls of the first Holy Cross Church, which was built in the 13th century and destroyed in the town fire of 1689. Today's church building was significantly influenced by the Vorarlberg building school .

The three-story tower is a striking feature. The nave consists of a central nave and aisles, which are separated from the central nave by rows of pillars. The remains of the walls of the first church are still visible in the Gothic choir.

Furnishing

View into the church

The high altar was created by Franz Lichtenauer in 1740. The left side choir ( Josefs-Chörlein ) houses a Renaissance crucifix from 1521 and a Pietà by Franz Joseph Simmler .

Probably the most valuable art monument in the city of Offenburg is the Mount of Olives . It is a niche building in the form of a Gothic chapel, which was built around 1524. There the disciples Peter, John and James are shown, behind them the praying Savior. In front of this niche building there is a crucifix on the church square, which reminds us that the old cemetery was once there. The crucifix was created by Peter Valentin the Elder. It is a copy of the crucifix created by Andreas von Urach in 1521.

On an outer wall is the grave monument of the knight Georg von Bach († 1538), the last member of the von Bach family .
