The Catholic Holy Cross Church in Assmannshausen was the former parish church of the village. Today it is a branch church of the parish Heilig Kreuz Rheingau, a new type of parish in the Limburg diocese . The so-called Rheingau Cathedral in Geisenheim has also been the parish church of Assmannshausen since 2015 .

The parish church of the Holy Cross has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002 .

history

The church was built in the 14th century and consecrated as the Holy Cross Church . The place itself was first mentioned in a document in 1108. The titular feast is on September 14th, the day of the Exaltation of the Cross . On the weekend after September 14th, the festival of the parish fair, also known locally as the “curb” or “fair”, is celebrated every year.

Since a pastor Herbert is mentioned in the chronicle of the church as early as 1325 and the oldest bell was cast in 1383, it is assumed that the four-storey church tower, the sacristy, the choir with five-eighth closure and part of the nave were completed at the end of the 14th century. The church originally had a three-bay late Gothic nave with buttresses half outside and half inside .

The square church tower in the east is 43 m high and has an octagonal pointed spire, which is surrounded by battlements with round arches and a gallery.

In the years 1888 to 1890 the nave was extended to the west (i.e. towards the entrance). The sandstone statue of the Good Shepherd was integrated into the new facade above the main portal . In addition, the main entrance was given a double staircase and a small side tower was added to the left of the main portal, the stairs of which lead to the gallery and the organ.

The sacristy to the right of the chancel was also rebuilt in 1890. Until then, the small room to the left of the chancel was used as a sacristy.

The following renovations with structural changes have been completed in recent years:

  • 1963 Interior renovation with new paint, benches and redesign of the chancel. The pulpit, communion bench and the marble paneling in the choir have been removed.
  • 1979 last exterior renovation
  • In 1983 the cross with the restored body of the field cross from Hanickel (Hainhügel) was hung in the triumphal arch .
  • Last interior renovations in 1984, the new sacrament altar made of red sandstone is built in the choir.
  • 1991 the old organ was taken out of service and a new one was installed.
  • 2006 renovation of the outer facade with the main portal and the double staircase

Altars

"Mary's Death"

The church has a high altar and two side altars.

The high altar used to be a cross altar and was replaced in 1872 by a winged altar in the Gothic style. A painting " Marientod " from the school of M.Grünewald from the late 15th century, donated from the estate of Karl August Baron von Klein (1793–1870), was added as the center piece, the paintings on the outer wings were supplemented by an unknown painter.

The two side altars left and right in front of the chancel are from the 16th century and were remodeled in 1744–1748. Instead of statues, they received altarpieces:

  • The Agatha altar on the left shows St. Sebastian, St. Agatha and St. Nicholas; the cartridge against contagious diseases, conflagration and water shortages; above are the 14 Holy Helpers.
  • The Marien altar on the right shows Mary and Elizabeth with Jesus and John (Raphael copy).

Bells

In 1954, on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, a four-part bell rang out for the first time. Three new bells were inaugurated for the oldest surviving bell from 1383:

organ

The first organ from 1793 was replaced in 1880 by a cone- store instrument (Opus 106) by organ builder Martin Joseph Schlimbach , son of organ builder Balthasar Schlimbach from Würzburg. It has 13 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The gaming table is free. The instrument is the only Schlimbach organ in the Diocese of Limburg that can still be used; it will be extensively renovated by the Vleugels organ building company in Hardheim from 2020 to 2021 . Before that, a digital organ from Ahlborn with 31 registers was installed in 1991 for cost reasons .

Choir

The choir has a star vault with console heads depicting mythical figures. The choir windows from 1734 with the color symbolism Faith, Hope and Love were destroyed in the Second World War. They were renewed in 1949. To the left and right of the high altar are two of four flags in the choir that were carried during the processions on Ascension and Corpus Christi in the late 1960s.

The flags are richly embroidered and were handcrafted between 1890 and 1914.

  • St. Joseph - red flags
  • St. Elisabeth - blue flag
  • St. Aloisius - green flag
  • St. Mary - white flag

Chapels

There are several chapels and holy houses in the parish of Assmannshausen. Two chapels are still used for church events:

  • The agony chapel on the way to Aulhausen is the annual station of the procession for Ascension Day and is decorated in this context.
  • The old Nikolauskapellchen opposite the Mäuseturm , below the ruin Ehrenfels was renewed in the year 1908 by the local Sankt Nikolaus-Schiffverein. Even today, the annual ship procession in honor of the patron saint of the driving people takes place on the Sunday after December 6th by ship from Assmannshausen to the chapel.
