Aulhausen was created as a clearing settlement in the archbishop's chamber forest . The oldest surviving documentary mention as Husun occurs in a deed of donation from Archbishop Ruthard von Mainz from 1108. The spelling Ulenhausen has been attested since 1210. The distinguishing feature in front of the otherwise common place name Hausen indicates the pottery trade (Latin olla = pot). Craftsmen settled here who made jugs and bowls in the area of the local clay pits . Pottery had a heyday from the 13th to the 16th century. In addition to items for everyday use, floor tiles with ornaments were also made for monasteries and castles, for example for Eberbach Monastery and Ehrenfels Castle . In the late Middle Ages , artistic objects such as clay sculptures were also made. Aulhauser pottery found widespread use in the Rhine-Main area as well as down the Rhine to northern Germany.

The Marienhausen monastery has been known to the Cistercian women since 1189, when it was first mentioned as the cella sororum Clarevallensis ordinis in loco, qui Hvsen dicitur .

The agriculture and viticulture dominated the local character from the late 19th to about the mid-20th century. Today the St. Vincenzstift is by far the largest employer in town.

The St. Vincenz Stift is a nationally known institution. This facility in Aulhausen is characterized by the care and support for disabled children.
